:: local attractions ::

Liapootah Power Station - On the road into Wayatinah you will drive over the penstocks (name for large hydropower pipes) which feed water into the Liapootah Power Station. Stop for a look and gain an insight into the large amount of water required to generate electricity. You will also have a chance to look at a unique piece of history - the Liapootah Power Station floral clock. If you are visiting in spring you will see the best side of this historic icon - 350 daffodils planted in the clock will be in bloom. While spring is the best time of year to view the clock, it is worth a look at any time.

Wooden Pipeline - A sight not to be missed in the area is the wooden pipeline which is reputed to be the biggest wooden pipeline in the Southern Hemisphere. There are 2 side by side pipelines.   The pipelines are 4.1m or almost 14ft in diameter and travel side by side for a kilometre and a quarter to the surge tanks before the power station. They are made from T&G timber about 10”x 4” Baltic Pine and have been continuously in service for over 50 years. To find this go back to the main road at the power station. Turn right toward Hobart and go about 200m along the road. Turn right toward Wayatinah Power Station and travel about 7km until you come to the fork in the road. The right-hand leg goes to Wayatinah Station and the left leg goes to the pipeline. Keep on this road ignoring all side roads until you get to the boom gate. Park at the side of the road and walk on the other side of the boom gate and around the corner is the pipeline winding its way down the hill to the power station. Total distance from where you turn off the Lyell Highway is 8.1kms.

Saltas - Salmon Enterprises of Tasmania Pty Ltd (SALTAS) is Tasmania’s leading salmon breeding facility supplying eggs and smolt from pedigreed stock to the Tasmanian Atlantic Salmon Industry. There are 2 farms in the Wayatinah area. One is located just at the back of the village, whilst the other is a few kilometres further on, located on the Florentine River. No public access, but worth a look from the road.
